"Over twenty years ago now I used to make large calibre pump-up, air, CO2 and even spring air rifles and pistols mainly for the US market. Mostly to sunny California. These were anything up to .740” calibre. I carried on making them in ever smaller numbers into the 1990s until design and development of pcps etc. for BSA took over my time. There was a small flurry of bigbore activity when I made the Puma range of big bore air rifles for Stalker rifles and then it stopped. When BSA thought about going into the US market with PCPs using a distributor called Compasseco I came up with a simple high power .22” air rifle for them which they named the Techstar and it had a full retail price of only $300 complete with open sights and a simple stock similar to the Lightning/Spitfire. At the same time I investigated a big bore, high power, version. Thirty calibre is a very much liked size in the US so I developed a simple self regulating valve system to suit a Techstar which was an export Hornet action without the regulator. This never saw the light of day which was a good thing because whilst big bore air rifles can be exceedingly accurate they need in my experience to be to be at least 9mm and the best in .45” and .50”. This was because of the ammunition available. Pistol bullets cast in pure lead worked very well in them.
